While David was climbing out from underneath the gazebo at the park, Helen was making calls to as many townspeople as possible, enlisting their eyes and ears in her search for the missing boy. She organized a few search parties, some to weed through the outskirts and others to watch the roads. She only hoped he hadn’t gone too far.

The phone rang six times before Mr. Shelding picked up, and Helen was just about to push the switch hook when his voice came dancing through the line.

“Hello? Hello, are you still there?”

“I’m here, Steven. It’s Helen.”

“Sorry, I was out front in the garden.”

“I was just calling to ask if you’d seen anything yet. I know it’s a longshot, it’s just… if anyone might see something it’s you or someone else in that area.”

“Oh,” he said. “Well, I saw Alex just a few minutes ago. Her usual spot.”

“Hmm. Well, thanks…” Helen considered. “Would you mind checking on her sometime soon? Casually, of course. She’s a bit unpredictable these days.”

“Of course. Won’t be a problem.”

“Great. Thanks, Steven.”

“All right. Bye, bye.”

Helen dropped the phone into its cradle and ran her hand through her hair, sitting on the edge of her bed. The man down the hall would be waking up soon. She wasn’t sure what to expect, or whom to expect. Hopefully things had taken care of themselves by now. Until he woke up, she’d be busy with other chores.

Phone calls, phone calls, phone calls.
